Hospitality CoordinatorThis is a featured page

The role of the hospitality coordinator is to make sure people feel welcome at the event and are glad they came. For most campuses, this means organizing meals (some campuses offer 3 meals, which means getting all the food donated if possible). Also, if applicable, the hospitality coordinator designs and purchases the MLK "keepsake"/giveaway for participants (t-shirts, pens, mugs, etc). MLK Logo

This position is largely dependent on the campus and their needs.
Here's an example of what one campus does for food for their MLK Challenge:
  • breakfast: continental breakfast made up of whatever local restaurants and grocery stores donate -- normally juice, coffee, bagels, biscuits
  • lunch: purchased the weekend before MLK Day & separated into one giant bagged lunch per group -- includes a loaf of bread, pb&j, fruit, cookies, & a gallon of water
  • dinner: donated pizza & drinks
For other campuses, students could be asked to bring their own lunch, or depending on the length of the day, providing dinner for participants might not be necessary.

The "keeper" or giveaway item has been a big hit on campuses, as it not only serves as a physical reminder to the participants of serving in honor of Dr. King, but it's a great way to advertise on your campus for next year's event. College students love free t-shirts (and these are perhaps the best means of advertising for next year!), and you can normally work with your local screenprinting locale to get a good deal on one-color/double sided shirts (normally under $3 a piece). Other ideas include:
  • notebooks with MLK quotes
  • camping and travel mugs
  • frisbees
Be creative! (MLK quotes are always a great addition to any giveaway item. And be sure to include logos for any organizations that are sponsoring!)

The logo on this page is the MLK Day of Service/Corporation for National and Community Service official logo. Feel free to use it on your keepsake/giveaway item. You can find the original image to download on the MLK Day website or by clicking on the image.
